The Museum of Flight has announced that the National Naval Aviation Museum has granted them the permanent loan of a McDonnell Douglas F/A-18C Hornet. The aircraft was part of the celebrated Blue Angels flight demonstration team (Number 2) and was retired early this year.
The retired Blue Angel will be partially disassembled so it can be trucked from Pensacola, FL, to the Museum in Seattle. Museum officials expect Number 2 to arrive on August 22nd. Upon arrival of the aircraft, it will be immediately reassembled in the parking lot to the west of the recently added Aviation Pavillion, before being placed in the Pavillion for display. The museum is inviting the public to see the historic aircraft during the time they prepare it for exhibition.
More Details on the Retired Blue Angel
The aircraft, bearing Navy registration number 163106, became part of the Blue Angels team in early 2004, and flew with the team until earlier this year. However, Blue Angel Number 2 came to the team with a distinguished combat record.
This F/A-18 was first part of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 87, joining the service in 1986. It flew combat missions during Operation Desert Storm and Operation Southern Watch over Iraq, as well as Operation Continue Hope in Somalia. Additionally, the fighter jet was flown over Afghanistan post 9/11, and in 2003, flew strikes over Iran.
The Museum of Flight invites enthusiasts to check the Museum’s social media outlets, where they will be sharing the latest news and photos of Blue Number 2 as it travels across America to its new home.
