Reviewing the basic six flight instruments
In this article, we will be sharing with you three short videos. These videos cover the basics of the “basic six” flight instruments. These videos will be beneficial for student pilots or aviation enthusiasts who enjoy learning more about how pilots operate theses magnificent aircraft. However, if you are a seasoned pilot, these videos will likely not go deep enough to provide you with any additional information. But never fear! As is our style here at Disciples of Flight, we will soon follow up this video series with a more advanced series!
Flight Instruments Overview
The first video is an introduction to the magnetic compass, and the “basic six” flight instruments. They are the airspeed indicator, attitude indicator, vertical speed indicator, heading indicator, altimeter and turn coordinator.
Flight Instruments – Part 1
This video goes into more detail on the three flight instruments that obtain their readings from the plane’s static system. They are the airspeed indicator, vertical speed indicator, and altimeter. It also talks briefly about the static port and pitot tube, and how they function to provide the flight instruments with their readings.
Flight Instruments – Part 2
This video goes into more detail on the magnetic compass and the three flight instruments that that are powered by gyroscopes. They are the turn coordinator, heading indicator, and attitude indicator. The video also covers how the instruments are powered by the plane’s internal gyroscopes.
Knowing how to properly use the magnetic compass and the basic six flight instruments is important for all pilots.
